What is the choreography of power?

For Witch Dance, I became interested in two performances: the 1926 Hexentanz by German Expressionist dancer Mary Wigman, and a 2010 performance of Larry T’s Get Off Your Ass by the American drag queen Detox Icunt.

Despite the eight decades between them, each piece seemed to draw from the same energy. Each dancer uses her movements and body to demarcate a space around herself, within which a ritual unfolds.  By the time each piece reaches its conclusion, they have transformed themselves entirely.

With Witch Dance, I created a frieze of works on paper exploring this alchemy.

My collages incorporated gestures, shapes, and colors drawn directly from these performances. Thes pieces alternate with stills from Detox’s piece, which have been monoprinted with layers of ink.
