The Sound of the World
Graphite, cut paper, metal foil, pins on wall
25 ‘ x 10’
2012
I created my first wall drawing in 2012 as part a group exhibition.
At the time I was making small diptychs on found surfaces in my studio that explored dream states, meditation, and other actions of the mind. These pieces were intimately scaled, but I soon became interested in the mind as a place, a landscape, or an environment - something that could surround a viewer.
I scaled up my imagery and began using the wall as a found surface.

Above + Inside Graphite, Latex, cut tin on wall Roughly 7' x 12' 2015 Created on-site and in direct response to the architecture of the space, these pieces were ephemeral: on view for the length of an exhibition then painted over upon its completion.
Pilgrim Graphite, Latex on wall Roughly 36” tall 2015 Friends and family served as models for these pieces, but their identities were generally concealed by rendering them from an oblique perspective.
Despite this, the time spent drawing what I imagined to be every hair on their head using only a technical pencil was another way to feel nearer to them. This intimacy was one of my materials, something felt rather than something seen.

Counterspell Graphite, latex on wall with ceramics, wovens, live plants and found object sculptures and artworks Roughly 6' x 12' 2017My wall drawings culminated with Counterspell, which brought together my own site-specific drawings with many small ceramic and sculptural objects, as well as various artworks created by a group of collaborators.
Unlike other wall drawings, this piece was re-created on-site in several different locations (with slight variations each time.)
